Our vision to make Spring Graduation as big as FAMU/FSU Homecoming for young alumni. Keep spreading the word.

So we decided to streamline the process.

No upfront donations. We aligned fundraising with fun. And this meant the bar.

The more young alums bought from the bar (responsibly), the more would be given back to FAMU. And all with minimal effort.

Or so we thought.

The goal was to give $3,000 back to FAMU by donating 10% of bar sales from the Friday event at the Brogan Museum and the Saturday event at the IMAX. Our hypothesis was that 2,000 young alums would purchase $30,000 worth of drinks over the weekend ($15,000 per event). And with an average drink price of $8, just 3,750 need to be purchased (or 2 drinks per person).

Although we gave each guest two (2) complimentary drinks, this seem reasonable.

It didn’t happen this.

We didn’t account for the extremely strong drinks being served. Most people couldn’t make it past the two complimentary drinks. And so, we only had $5,000 in bar sales which resulted in $500 towards the FAMU Foundation.

Consider it a costly lesson learned. One that we’ll apply for the upcoming Florida Classic. Details to come.

Last night, we held the 2nd EVER Atlanta Young Alumni at the posh Loft at Castleberry Hill. It was an intimate evening of drinks, great food, and networking.

Next Young Alumni Committee Event: Sometime before July 1. Could be Kickball, Flag Football, a Cookout, or a combination of all three or more.

Let’s focus on the two highlighted words, shall we?

Repeatable

Over the last 24 months, we’ve been testing different types of young alumni activities (Wine Tastings, Happy Hours, Kickball and Flag Football games, Bowling, etc) in Atlanta, DC, Tallahassee, and Orlando. The objective is to come up with a standardized set of 5-10 events which can be applied to markets around the country (taking into account their local culture).  In a perfect scenario, we could have Young Alumni Wine Tastings occurring on the same day across 10 markets.

This is important to remember because, if the fundamental assumption is based on social activities, a Joey Digital or Mitch Brooks cannot be multiple markets at one time. It is physically impossible. Therefore, a system has to be developed where a person or committee with even basic event planning/promotional skills can be successful.

Scalable

Scalability differs according to the situation, but in this case, it means membership increases as our costs (cash for marketing, time, and effort) decrease – with time and effort being the most expensive. This is basis for the $10/month due structure. The assumption is that it is less expensive (read: takes less time and effort) to get someone to pay $10/month once (and have it deducted every month from their card), than it is to get them to pay $65 – 80 once a year.

Remember, no one in the Alumni Association is getting paid – this is all volunteer. Therefore, we should be cognizant of their (expensive) time and effort. (Note: I don’t believe in the word “should”).

But maybe our assumptions are wrong. Maybe social activities aren’t the solution to young alums’ problems (the value prop). Maybe young alums don’t want to pay $10/month.

Behavior will tell the story.

In addition to having a rockin’ time, we’ll also be raising $2,000 for the Hardship Scholarship Fund with a friendly competition between the Incoming Classes. We’re working on a prize getting professional social media photos (for use on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc) for the members of the Incoming Class that raises the most money.

[Sidenote: 1997 is expected to win in a landslide because, well, we're the livest/most talented freshmen class that has ever graced FAMU's campus.]
